I was engaged and entertained throughout my entire reading of this text. While some parts were out there, I found myself giggling and agreeing with the author on several points. Valerie Solanas is extremist in her writing; however, the underlying message is more digestible and agreeable. Essentially, Solanas argues that men have ruined the world, which is a fair assumption. She digs into the inner workings of men; their character, wants, needs, and desires. Solanas deconstructs the inequality between men and women while providing her own commentary. Many believed this to be a work of satire; however, Solanas insists that it is truly exactly what she believes. When looking at her past, her view of men and society is understandable. Solanas was raped and sexually assaulted during her childhood and teen years. This traumatic event during her formative years shaped her view on men and society. It is important to note that Solanas is not someone who should be cast aside. She is an extremely intelligent woman having studied at the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Minnesota, and the University of California, Berkeley. While the SCUM Manifesto, initially, did not have a large reach, Solanas created a name for herself; albeit an infamous name. Solanas shot Andy Warhol because he threw away her only copy of a manuscript. This in effect boosted the popularity of all of her work. Overall, the SCUM Manifesto is well written, though out, and executed. i would even suggest that it becomes more commonplace to read in higher education.
