This text was written by William Powell as a teenager and published in 1971 amidst Vietnam war controversy. Powell was worried that the United States was slowly turning towards Communism and his ultimate goal with this text was to provide people with skills to organize against communism, fascism, and capitalist threats. Chapter one covers drugs, from how to grow a marijuana plant to heating a solution of DMT in a water bath. He describes a new world culture where; ‘The use of drugs in this new culture will be free. There will be no more political arrests for pot or acid, for who will arrest whom?’. He states that pot is central to the revolution because it ‘weakens social conditioning and helps create a whole new state of mind’. After the drug chapter, we have the electronics, sabotage, and surveillance chapter. This covers electronic bugging devices and electronic jamming. Chapter three is natural, nonlethal, and lethal weapons. This covers natural weapons, hand to hand combat, how to make tear gas, you know just the usual stuff. I found this chapter interesting because I don’t even know where he found all of this stuff, especially as a teenager he must have been doing an insane amount of research. Chapter four, explosives and booby traps. This one is kind of insane, Molotov Cocktails, homemade grenades, a TON of different types of traps, and so many chemical concoctions I have no idea about. Interestingly, after writing this book Powell said the book wasn’t meant for political fringe organizations, and he later renounced the book and ideas, but could not stop the publication. Reading about this stuff was very interesting and I can see why this book can get somebody on an FBI watchlist. I thought this was a riveting read, and the history of the text itself is also fascinating!
