I read the SCUM Manifesto, and it is a text written by Valerie Solanas in 1967. The manifesto is known for its confrontational and bad language, talking abiout the elimination of men and talking about how they want to have an all female society. Solanas argues that men are the root cause of all social problems and that women are oppressed and reduced to a lesser role in society. She believes that the only solution to this problem is for the extinction of the males in society. She advocates for women to seize power and overthrow the existing power structures that have been created and sustained by men. It sounds to me that it was very controversial because it proposes a violent and extreme solution to gender inequality. I defenitely think the text has been disagreed on by alot of people and most of the world disagrees with it. Despite the criticism, I bet the SCUM Manifesto has definitely been influential towards some more extreme feminists. It really emphasis on women’s freedom has encouraged many women to assert their rights and demand equal treatment. Overall, the SCUM Manifesto is definitely controversial. I don’t think I would recommend or give another read to it later in life.
