Behind Satanic Verses

The Satanic Verses written by Salman Rushdie in 1988, this book was quite the controversial book when created. Rushdie was born in India But then moved to England which was most of the reason why this book is controversial. Since Rushdie was raised Muslim; he had a identity crisis, and his opinions on that religion was in a novel “Satanic Verses.” Questioning the religion in itself was something that riled up the Muslim community. A year later after the “Satanic Verses” Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa which is a legal opinion to kill the author. Being an Apostate has the punishment of death and since Rushdie was raise Muslim but talks of slander to the Muslim Religion. England helped Rushdie to go into hiding, which caused the British Government and Iran fight over this one man.

Anarchist Cookbook

The Analysis of the Anarchist cookbook, which was first published in 1971 by William Powell. He started to write this cookbook in 1968 when figuring out that he would be drafted to serve in the Vietnam War. This book created chaos throughout the country, which caught attention especially to the FBI. The book is created to provoke violence, which the book has various recipes for contraband and also most known as the creation of bombs. This book shows Powell’s anger for the government and wanting to cause mayhem. The FBI would keep an eye out if anyone had a copy of the book, understandably. Although when reading it there is not just bombs, which is what the book is mainly known for, there is, especially at the time when this was published, very suppressed and censored ideas. Drugs to weapons, to explosives.

Mein Kampf 7&8

Through chapter 7, he tells the story of life being a soldier in World War I, he explains the that enemy propaganda in 1915 and how it turned the army what the enemy wanted it to be. He felt as if the war was only going to continue forever, people at home were therefore awaiting peace, but militarism and the Kaiser, they were not waging war on Germany rather than against solely guilty party the kaiser. He believes that the propaganda issue would be held better if he were to be charge of the situation.
Just talks about the different types of propaganda. • Hitler called Germany the “Fatherland”
A lot of raising confidence of the enemy, In 1916 October 7th Hitler was injured and was on his way home. During The transfer back to Germany, he heard a soldier talking about how he was glorifying himself after getting wounded, which hitler detested the idea “with all the means of their contemptible eloquence to make the conceptions of the decent soldiers ridiculous and hold up then spineless coward as an example.” Hitler though it was cowardice of a man, he though the real heroes were the ones that died fighting in the war.
Then he talks of the Jews calls them “indispensable” he accused the Jews of gaining control or power due to the war “While the Jew robbed the whole nation and pressed it beneath his domination”
Chapter 8
At the end of November 1918, he returned to Munich, he did not the soldiers council so he knew he needed to leave, especially with the friend and comrade of his, Schmidt Ernst which he died in 1919 after being in charge of the Revolution. He realizes that although he has many ideas for the “future” and politics, he is just a soldier out of thousands. Knows that he is in nowhere he needs to be to make a difference. He starts to go to a course which makes him feel like he is stepping in the right direction toward his goal. He meets these men hoping to share his point of views. They were convinced that Germany could no longer be saved from the impending collapse by the parties of the November crime, the Center and social democracy.
Hitler became obsessed with the idea of the economy and how “the international stock exchange capital was not only the greatest agitator for the war but but the especially now that the fight is over, it spares no effort to turn peace into hell.” He started to study again, he was given an offer to speak to many and so he did. Hitler gave many lectures, and led “hundreds, indeed thousands of comrades back to their people and fatherland.” He nationalized the troops. This was the first moment he know that there could be a movement with his idea and like-minded comrades.

Scum Manifesto

Valorie Solanas wrote this manifesto In 1967, with the a tragic life behind her, a father who sexually abused he, which gained her a quite straight forward perspective on the opposite sex. Solanas wrote a vulgar and quite disturbing writings of wanting to commit genocide against all men. Through the life she experienced as a young girl, her writings suggest that she thinks that men only become fathers just to do devious things to their kin. Valorie Solanas is most known as the woman who attempted murder on Andy Warhol, which made her popular and as well as the Scum Manifesto; which made women curious and started to be supportive of her ideals of extreme feminism. Although the Manifesto shows many violent and radical, Valorie did point out many problems that society had with women. One important problem that I believe is still prevalent to today’s world is when women have desires it means that it is deviant and that kind of behavior is unacceptable. While men can feel desire and act on it without being shamed, women are frowned upon for feeling such thing; there are negative societal perception for women following suit.

Marquis de Sade: 120 Days of Sodom

Trying to read “120 Days of Sodom” was an experience that I will try not to remember. “120 days of Sodom” has got to be the hardest book to read not that I couldn’t comprehend, it was more of I didn’t want to comprehend. Every word was a signal of mad man. Which he Marquis de Sade was he was put in various prisons and an insane asylum for doing such inconceivable acts while in these prisons not only did his delusions amplified it blossomed into writings of sexual deviance. I am going to be honest I did not even get close to finish the book, every time I would try there would be a black lash towards my way. I can’t even say much of the book only that you get this overpowered wave of a delusional and sadistic man. Especially when this was written in 1785, although they would sensor many things back then, it must’ve been a shock to all who read it within the book was ravings of a crazy man with what they would say would be “indecent.” To say it was indecent is an understatement to what it really is. Although it is quite a disturbing book to read he likes to put out the point that these four wealthy men are in charge A duke, a bishop, a judge, and a banker. In Marquis De Sade’s way of thinking he believed to be the most influential and powerful men which he isn’t wrong. While these men in power get to do whatever they want to the people around them. You ever hear the saying “With great power comes great responsibility” Well apparently these four characters never heard of it. They use their power to hurt other people for pleasure.

Mary of Magdala

When recalling the story of Jesus, we think of the way the apostles followed Jesus’s direction after his death. The apostles had faith in Jesus’s teachings and would go out spreading the word of Jesus. Nevertheless, the story of Mary of Magdala tells a different story the “Gospel of Mary”. The very few pages of the transcript conveyed the apostles were the opposite of joyful when it was time for them to go forth with his teachings they lost hope in the word but do you know who didn’t? Mary.

Instead of fearing the consequences, Mary tried to comfort Peter when losing the faith in the word of Jesus. Mary revealed the vision that was bestowed upon her to comfort Peter, knowing very well that everything was going to be alright. Peter reacting harshly to her kind words due to Mary being a woman, doubting her word that Jesus wouldn’t give her any visions. The question is, were their prejudices within the apostles? That is not the story that we hear in the Bible. Then the other question arises if this story was even real. That is the question that rules over through the Bible and early transcripts, what is real? The answer to that question is no one knows.

With the “Gospel of Mary” the process of creating the translation to publication for public use was exceptionally difficult. It started in 1896 in Cairo when a manuscript dealer gave a German scholar named Carl Reinhardt an ancient papyrus with many stories within. The one story that captivated him, knowing it was a very important manuscript that dealt with the ancient world. He started to begin translating it. That began the treacherous process of this story being published. It started in 1896 and was finally published in 1955, although there were mysteriously missing pages from the Gospel those few pages made a great impact in the world even today. This Gospel brought up many questions. If it were real, why wasn’t it in the Bible, where the missing pages were, and what story was true?

Jesus left the world knowing that the apostles would take his learning and use it for good. To spread his teachings, and have faith that the world would have peace. In today’s world, Jesus’s name is still known throughout the whole world and the miracles that he bestowed. Now do we owe that to Mary, or is it just another story?

The Analysis of Milton’s Areopagitica- Vincent Balsi

Throughout the beginning of the speech, Vincent Balsi takes an approach to discover if there should be regulation on the First Amendment, freedom of Speech. If regulation or unregulating gives the people a need for the truth a need to speak what the people think is right or wrong.

Balsi conveys that there could be consequences from the boldness of freedom of speech, if not careful with one’s words that could turn into controversial topics which some people rather let those words rest. It also entails the power in human’s self-control and responsibility through their words. Throughout history, words have always been a significant detail in every event where they can disrupt the constant motion of life.

In this speech, Balsi uses the pamphlet of Milton’s Areopagitica to give us an understanding of freedom of speech. Milton was a controversial and bitter man who had various strong opinions on political and social departments. The Areopagitica was addressed to the Parliament of England, which the name Areopagitica comes from Greece, the Aristocratic Council of the Areopagus which entails they had a democracy. While Milton was trying to convey that there should be a decrease in censorship through people’s writings.

Milton’s writings mostly produced areas of truth, such as his work about divorce was needing censorship which started his passionate rival against Parliament about how writers need a license from the government before they could write. It gives barriers that these Authors had to follow to write their piece. As a writer where they could not speak their full truth would understandably be a concern. Although the other argument would be the need for censorship due to people’s lack of self-control and would be radical with their words which could do more harm than good. Milton was called the ” The Great Unmasker” which sounds quite powerful. Milton was not scared of the consequences he dwelled on the facts and truth, just as Milton said in Balsi’s speech “Truth is strong without the help of censors” and describing truth as “our richest Merchandise”.

At the beginning of the speech, Balsi argued the regulations on freedom of speech while Milton was fighting against censorship on authors’ works. Milton argued with the work of regulation aspiration and the need to find the truth about the controversy to fight against what is confined. When you are in a barrier it is human nature to want to try to fight against the current which Milton conveyed.
