Due to not being able to attend going to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C., I went on to the website and browsed for a little. What caught my eye immediately is what is said on the main page: “While many in the United States came to see Nazism as a threat, saving Jews from genocide never became a priority.” It is interesting and amazing that a Holocaust Museum located in the United States is clearly showing this statement. While World War II started in 1939, it was not until 1942 that the United States became involved. The museum is not shoving the truth away but is rather acknowledging the wrongs that were committed.
What caught my attention next is that right below the statement that I put above, there are links to encyclopedias, a link for the introduction to the Holocaust, and a link to resources for educators. While at first this may not seem important, encyclopedias are one of the ways the others can gain quick knowledge. They also provide ideas for people to go to if they are working on a presentation or paper. An introduction to the Holocaust is great, especially for students just starting to learn about it. I also think that I have never seen any, but if I have a small amount, of museum websites that provides resources for educators. It shows that the museum cares about students learning, how they are taught, and wants to make sure that educators have resources to do this.
I also appreciate that the museum is free. It gives the public the opportunity to learn about the past without having to worry about paying. It shows that the museum truly cares and wants others to learn about the Holocaust. With it being free, it is also a great opportunity for schools to bring their students to the museum. I also love how the website has their collection database on the main page as well. The museum knows that not everyone is able to go to the museum, so they make sure that the public knows that they can few items online. The website also has tabs for remembering survivors and victims, genocide prevention, and antisemitism and Holocaust denial. This gives the public an opportunity to learn what they could of at the museum and possibly provides resources that is only available online.
It is extremely unfortunate that I was not able to go to the museum so I am unable to talk about what is there, but I can say that based on the website, the Holocaust Museum is a place to teach and learn from. The museum does not hide the truth behind what happened during the Holocaust and neither does their website. I know that there is so much more on the website than what I have stated which means that there are so many pieces of history that this museum provides. I hope that one day I will be able to go to the museum, but I am glad that right now that the website is another place that I can view.
