I’m not a very religious person, but I found it very interesting how the general ideas of Christianity have evolved after reading this text. I personally never even knew about the Gospel of Mary of Magdala, and I didn’t know much about Mary of Magdala a lot either. After reading the excerpt and looking through more information, I can see that not many at all see her as a saint, but rather a character who isn’t morally a great person. Other people in the text like Peter actually try and put her ideas down because he does not see her as worthy, but in the end others back up her ideas and message. Specifically from this text she is referred to as a prostitute, but despite being put down, she as a person still has a lot of value in this text. She is after all the person that Jesus/The Savior tells his message to, and she is also the person who helps the other disciples keep their belief when they falter and struggle. The disciples thought that they could possibly be subject to the same fate as Jesus, which discouraged them immensely to actually spread the word of the gospel, which is unlike the traditional idea from Matthew where disciples joyfully preach the gospel. I believe that the fact that Mary is the one that Jesus tells his message is part of the reason why this text has been pushed away from the mainstream and hidden away from a widespread view. I believe that is why it never made it into the New Testament along with the other more controversial topics in the texts. One controversial statement in the text is the statement that there is no such thing as a sin, which in my opinion does not follow the mainstream idea of Christianity today. I also find it strange that there were not many copies of this text found throughout history. To me it feels like it was almost purposefully hidden from people. I believe that this text at the time was a mainstream text because of the fact that it was found in two different languages, and in 3 different areas, but it didn’t fit the eventual mold of what newer texts were looking for. All in all, the reading was very intriguing, and it was very interesting to think about the idea of how viewpoints evolve and change to become so different over time.
