The Gospel of Mary of Magdala was purchased by a German professor in Cairo, in the year 1896. The fifth century text was deciphered and although there were many set backs in the copying and printing process, several more copies have been found since. This ancient text featured the biblical figure of Mary of Magdala in a far more important and leading role as the first female apostle. It also feature many more gnostic views and themes, which is most likely the reason it was hidden or suppressed for so long.
