The Gospel of Judas, or the controversial account of the man who betrayed Jesus, leading to his later crucifixion. This gospel dives immediately into the close relation that Judas Iscariot and Jesus Christ share because of the “true gospel” being shared only with Judas. The gnostic nature of this gospel is what truly makes this account discredited. The main idea of the text is that “The body is temporary but spirit is eternal.” The word “generation” is said a lot in this gospel to push the idea that these specific people are not smart enough to see the gnostic idea that only Jesus seems to believe. What I thought was really interesting was the addition of the house with the 12 priests in it. The apostles talk about how the priests were sacrificing their wives and children and doing all of these inhumane things and then says that they were also having sex with other men. I find it interesting that during this time those three things were put on the same level. The step back from talking about those men to Jesus saying essentially that they were those men and that they were committing all of those sins for their so called god. This shows that Jesus seems to know more than all of them about their “god”. Around this area is where things fall apart for me because of the discussion of the stars and how the universe comes into play in all of this. I think this is why this text is seen as controversial because the main idea of religion is that there is a higher power or spirit somewhere and that it is not just the universe that created everything we know now.
