The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in DC explains in detail the holocaust, the events leading up to it, and the aftermath of the massacre. Having never been but wanting to, I researched the website and took a virtual tour of the museum to learn the reason behind the creation of this museum and what some of the memorials represent. During the holocaust, six million Jewish men, women, and children were murdered. Along with this though, there were approximately six million non-Jewish victims. The museum itself focuses on things like the backstories of the victims’ lives with things like a memorial wall, showing the faces of all of the people murdered during the Holocaust. There is also a section which includes a wall of shoes. These shoes were taken from all of the men, women, and children that were killed during that time. These aspects of the museum, as heavy as they are, do a great job of showing the true gravity of the Holocaust as a whole. When you first arrive at the museum, you have the opportunity to pick up a card. The cards have the name of a Holocaust victim or survivor. As you go through the museum and visit the different exhibits you can follow the journey of that particular person and uncover their respective stories. As you keep going through the museum the amount of people you learn about grows and you get to learn about the horrors that occurred during the holocaust. Overall, while not having been to this museum, the significance of it should make it something that everyone should see once in their lifetime.
