I found this to be an incredibly engaging read especially given the nature of how colonialism’s aftershocks have been present in the middle east recently. The withdraw from afghanistan and its return to taliban rule could be seen as a direct parallel to Fanon’s discussion of the role of the lumpenproletariat. The colonial power seat of Kabul has never represented actual control over the state of Afghanistan. The rural underinformed and dejected rural population of Afghanistan as a separate group from the educated classes in Kabul have no proved that US intervention was powerless against an uninfluenced lumpenproletariat. This is all conjecture from someone lacking significant education on the topic so I will move on. The state of Israel’s colonial expansion into Gaza and the West Bank also follow many points Fanon discussed. I feel that now we exist in a time in history where information from crisis such as Gaza are easily accessible to the point that propaganda machines for the Global North are not capable of influencing western youth in favor of the Israeli state. I think Vice President Harris’s recent loss, although caused by many many factors, was contributed to by her at times ambiguous but still supportive position for Israeli military aid. Especially as the quality of life worsens for certain parts of the west polarization against western interests among western youth is heightened significantly. The Manichaean world model for the west is broken when poverty and disease reach formerly thriving hubs of American industry for example. What great way of life can be “given” to native peoples when the west is unsure of its own decisions domestically. We live in a time where it could even be said that the Urban Proletariat of certain colonial states in the world are more supportive of western powers than bourgeoisie youth in those powers home countries. The world is baffling and I am dissapointed in the choices we have made.
