I’ve always been interested in the European Theatre of World War II, especially stories about the persecution of Jews and how the lucky few survived the Holocaust. But this article gave me a lot of perspective that I had never looked at before. I thought I knew that one of the main reasons why Jews were persecuted was because of Hitler’s conquest for a pure Aryan race. Jews were not even considered a race, even if they had fought for Germany in the previous World War or pledged loyalty to their home country. However, I hadn’t realized that the Nazis also believed the Jews to be communists. They thought that the Jews had an instinct to take over the world (as described in Protocols of the Elders of Zion). As Browning says in his introduction, one of the reasons for this was because some of the Bolshevik Revolution leaders were of Jewish origin. The overall idea of the article reminded me of how it’s sort of relevant today, with the negative stereotypes we place on races like Muslims or Hispanics. The fact that people are so ignorant and assume the worst of people is similar to how people reacted against the Jews in the early 20th century.
