Marquis de Sade was born in France; his father was a diplomat, and his mother was a lady in waiting to a princess. Early in his childhood his father left his mother, and he grew up with his uncle who educated him. From his childhood he was said to be misbehaved and rebellious. He was well known for his brutalities against women, and he was imprisoned a lot for sexual misconduct. This text ‘120 Days of Sodom’ was written while he was imprisoned in the Bastille for sexual deviancy. Marquis de Sade participated in some of the activities mentioned in this text, so I honestly think this text was kind of like his sick fantasy. He hated the church and throughout the book there are so many mentions of the church being bad and evil, or just being frowned upon if it is brought up. The longer he spends in prison and the longer he writes, the story just turns into a list. At first it was set up with descriptions and some semblance of a storyline (as messed up as it was) but towards the end of the book all structure just turns into lists. These lists are just describing abuse/sexual activities. I think that the longer he spent in prison alone with his thoughts the more he slowly went insane. I think this text resembles his sick thoughts, and I think it was almost like a way for him to write his fantasies out since he did participate in orgies and such in real life, which was part of the reason he was in prison. Also, in this text there is a class structure in the way that the victims get treated and I think this is because Marquis de Sade did grow up in nobility. After the Bastille was stormed during the Revolution his manuscripts were thought to be lost but they were actually stolen. ‘120 Days’ was published later in 1904 for scientific purposes.
