In the movie Bambi, there are darker themes talked about with beautiful artistry. The theme in which I would like to discuss in this post is the portrayal of the mother. In the beginning she is viewed as wise and so very calm in her demeanor. While is her last few seconds she is completely distressed and portrayed as weak just like the rest of us. It is almost feather-like in the way she speaks in the first part of the movie, teaching the young Bambi the walks of life. Yet, during the time in which Bambi realizes that she is gone, he also has to realize he is alone in the world now. He no longer has his feathered blanket for cover. Another point that I would like to bring up is the usage of color and shadow within the movie to portray feeling and further the darker themes within the children’s movie. During the time in the meadow for the first time, there is dense fog, and the grass has a heavy blue tone to it. Given that, it therefor creates an almost eerie but calming effect to the new and mysterious meadow to the new fawn. This could be tied to the fact that blue is heavily tied to the feeling of being calm or even sadness, which could imply the impending doom that the meadow holds over the forest. Finally, the colors and shadows within the death of Bambi’s mother are also very powerful in the meadow. The darkness is exasperated as death wreaks havoc over the environment and panic sets in. Yet there is a different color tone to the meadow this time, an almost orange in the air proving even the air to hold panic within itself. With that added upon the heavy contrast in the grass, it equals the effect of hopelessness and utter distress within the person viewing the movie.
