The Armenian Genocide is one of those events that I’ve vaguely heard about but was never 100% sure what exactly happened. The only thing that I had heard about it until viewing the film was that the Turkish government was very keen on censoring the details of the event and claiming it never happened. I looked into it and on the Turkish government’s website they openly deny it publicly. Even on YouTube videos if you look at some of the comments there are still people who deny that the events even happen. With that being said, after looking into it more thoroughly I can safely say that I am horrified by the magnitude of what happened. The Armenian people had already suffered discrimination under the Ottoman Empire for quite a while and were also forced to pay higher taxes than other people groups within the empire. The genocide began in 1915 and started with the mass arrest of Armenian intellectuals. The Ottomans then proceeded to kill up to around 1.2 million Armenians by many means including executions, death marches, drownings, and other forms of brutality. The Ottoman Empire knew that many nations in the West were already preoccupied with World War 1 so they took advantage of the circumstances. Fortunately, there was still resistance against the Turkish government. The Young Turks was a resistance movement that fought back against the Ottoman Sultan and worked to create equality for all people groups. Afterward, refugees were not allowed aid and were not allowed back into the country. In 1990 the nation of Armenia was established and now 3.5 million Armenians reside there. It is considered the first modern genocide due to the way that it was orchestrated and planned out. This event should be discussed more in a global sense, especially in the US.
