In my first post and in the class discussion today I touched on how Marquis might be coming after the church in his readings, fantasies, and/or rituals. When I did some research on his early childhood it said he went to Jesuit school. The school is ran by followers of Jesus (the Jesuits) who are very strict and give out discipline when they feel is needed. It’s no shocker to anyone that Christians and especially catholics when it comes to scandals having to do with the perversion of little kids and the higher ups such as popes and the priest. Im sure Marquis was assaulted on multiple occasions at that school. When he started to get in trouble outside of the school and being sometimes prosecuted by the church he wanted to show how sick these people are who are in charge. Do the people care about who their “leaders” of god are? Obviously he (Marquis) turned away from the church completely and has a burning passion of hatred for it as he states multiple times in the beginning of the book, he mocks leaders as well by naming some of his men after them, The President. In his writing he wants to show that these people are so entirely strange that they shouldn’t be in charge. He shows examples of possibly the things that he had done to him in his writings. This is basically a jab saying oh well y’all are sick leaders look at what I can do. Does my sick and twisted thoughts mean I should lead as well? I’ll show you a real leader. While even though he is a sick man and using children for his sexual fantasies probably doesn’t come as a surprise to most, I think he was trying to show people like hey this is what happened to me, this is what the leaders in charge did to me, we are no different, are these the people you call your leaders, and do they get away with it because they are above everyone else? Status at this point in time was extremely important even to Marquis. He primarily wanted girls and boys, men and women from more wealthy families to perform these heinous acts on. Based on that I think he is trying to challenge the fact that it doesn’t matter what you do and how you can hurt and traumatize other people if you’re of certain kind of status then you can get away with it. Everyone looks past what the church leaders do well because they are higher status than Marquis. He proves that the people don’t care who they follow as long as they’re are certain kind of person.
