I enjoyed reading this different take on the story of Bambi, and how it very much it is different and has a darker feel than the Disney one we all knew growing up. I feel this book is telling us about how things can be perfect and amazing and beautiful life can be, but in an instant it can all be taken away and changed very quickly. The first chapters are about Bambi and his mom, and her teaching him the ways to live and experience life. At first, he is so excited, and he feels life is so beautiful but overtime it starts to set and he gets just a glimmer of how dangerous life can be too. The next part of the book is focusing on Bambi taking on life alone and becoming more distant from his mother as she is letting him become his own. This is the part where Bambi is in the meadows, and he first encounters the danger and he gets a rifle pointed at him. At this point he turns and runs away as fast as he can, at this time he doesn’t find his mother and never finds her because she had gotten shot. While he is learning to live on his own, he finds another deer who is alone which he was known as the Old Prince. The prince takes Bambi under his wing and is a mentor to him on how he should go about living and most importantly surviving. The next thing that happens is that Bambi avoids the deer he loves because of how scared he is of losing her just like he lost his mother. At the end of the book, the prince had wandered off and died so Bambi steps up into his role and lived as the new Prince of the deer. I really enjoyed reading this book and felt I prefer this more than the Disney version because of how much more realistic it was.
