The first thing that intrigued me is how little is known of the Gospel of Mary. The fact that there is not a full book, but only eight pages of it is insane. These eight pages bring into light a new way of looking at the early christians. Mary was definitely shunned out of the collection of gospels in the Bible simply because she was a woman. However, since she did have a gospel of Christ there had to be some followers of her that she preached the Gospel too. Since the first six pages will forever be lost we will always be stuck entering the story in the middle of a discussion. In the opening pages of the Gospel, Mary states to the followers not to follow some heroic leader, but to believe and follow in one’s true self. This is contradictory to many churches of the modern day. Who preaches that you must follow Jesus or spend eternity in hell.

Mary is soon bashed by the other Apostles, because they do not believe that Jesus would give a gospel to a woman. How sad this is, it is very accurate for the time period as most women did not have any authority (excluding prostitutes who ran a lot of communities throughout all of history). It’s scary because the gospel that Mary proclaims has a beautiful message, however since the men are so deep in their own pride they refuse to listen.

Can we just imagine if we had those other six pages? It is honestly so intriguing that there is a Gospel of Mary and yet I have never heard or been told about it until Friday. I went to church tens of times as a kid and not once did my pastor talk about the Gospel of Mary. Why? I honestly think it’s because it is not a complete text. If all the pages of the Gospel of Mary were there, I think it would be one the most recited gospels to date. It also begs the question, is the Bible a completed text?
