The movie “Bambi” is one of my top 10 favorite films, however after reading the original book, I see that Disney did absolutely no justice to the literary masterpiece. Even then, the movie is still beautiful and evokes many emotions. What really makes me like this movie is the flawless integration of music and visuals. With every clumsy step that Bambi took, there would be a note to go along with it and during the build up scenes, a whole orchestra would play. This truly made me engulfed in the movie. I loved the colors and how they changed with the mood of the scene. I am a big fan of the old Disney animation style and the cute animals were perfect. Something that disappointed me though was how in the movie there was the character Thumper, a bunny around Bambi’s age, and in the book he was not at all the same. The book had a character named Friend Hare who was much older and not at all similar to the energetic Thumper. I took a liking to Friend Hare in the book because he was not like the other animals Bambi encountered. He was very fond of Bambi and did not seem to be in a great hurry like the other animals. You can tell that the movie dumbed the book down to suit their target audience, little kids. I understand why they did this, however this is why I enjoy the book more than the movie. It also saddens me that Felix Salten, the writer of the original Bambi, is completely disconnected from the current Bambi. The book was raw, the movie is lighthearted. Something else that I was not fond of in the movie was the hint of misogyny. The whole story was wrapped around the fact that the male deer were the princes and saviors of the forest when in reality, men suck.
