Maus was written by a man that goes by Art Spiegelman, but His real name is Itzhak Avraham ben Zeev Spiegelman. He was born February 15, 1948, in Stockholm, Sweden. He immigrated to the US in 1951 and was registered as Arthur Isadore. Later in 2011 he changed his name to Art Spiegelman. He was born to Zeev Spiegelman and Andzia Zylberberg also known as Vladek and Anja Spiegelman in Maus. He also had a brother named Rysio aka Richieu. He died before Art was born during the holocaust. He was sent to live with his aunt, who they thought he would be safe with, but she ended up poisoning herself and the children, including Rysio, so they would not be sent to execution camps. His parents survived the holocaust, but his mother ended up committing suicide afterwards and his father died on 18 August 1982, never seeing Maus completed. He married Françoise Mouly in 1977 and they had 2 children. A daughter Nadja Rachel, and a son, Dashiell Alan. Art wrote Maus to record his father’s experience in the holocaust and his experience with being a holocaust survivors’ son. Art had always had a fondness for drawing since his early ages. During 1973 he wrote a strip about his mother’s suicide called “Prisoner on Hells Planet”. Maus was written between 1980 and 1991. It was first published in 1980 chapter by chapter in the comic anthology Raw. Every chapter but the last appeared in Raw. It first came out as a book in 1986 with the name “My Father Bleeds History” then in 1991 volume 2 was published with the name “And Here My Troubles Began”.
