Akin to The Turner Diaries, Dabiq is surprisingly professional compared to the expectation of such a publication. Serving as the official magazine of ISIS, Dabiq is a piece of propaganda produced with surprising regularity. As is the typical stigma surrounding an extremist publication, expectations are low. Usually, extremist works are “garage” style publications, meaning that they are usually produced, not by a professional printer or publisher but with a printing press in a garage. They consist of angry rants and the blaming of authority figures and institutions organized haphazardly. Dabiq, however, just as The Turner Diaries produced an interesting story, produces both a professional layout and well-written stories. The purpose of the magazine is, of course, ISIS propaganda, but the propaganda is achieved via a number of different story types. Primarily, there are those bolstering the ISIS troops and military endeavors. There are also articles detailing the religious message of ISIS, then more bashing the West and western politicians, using their rude or aggressive words towards ISIS as further leverage for their message. The professionalism of publication is, to repeat, striking. Notably in the first issue of the magazine, the graphic design is impressive. Though the quality in later issues decreases (which is to be expected, any magazine would want to make the largest impact initially), they remain well put together. As a result, it serves its job as propaganda for the West well. However, the language used is decidedly questionable if ISIS wishes to inspire the average Western to their cause. There is so much language that requires an advanced knowledge of Islam to understand that most readers may consider the magazine unreadable or difficult enough to read that they lose interest. The regularity of the publication is impressive as well. Despite the constant shifting of ISIS territory and its recent loss of most of it, the magazine continues to be published with decent regularity. Truly, for those wishing to create good propaganda, Dabiq is a good model.
