There’s a whole lot to the SCUM manifesto that makes me upset. There’s a temptation to characterize the Manifesto as some form of extreme feminism due to its pro-female attitude, but it’s the farthest thing from feminism I’ve ever read. As I understand it, feminism is the belief that all people deserve the same rights. Feminism fights for equality, namely for women because they typically aren’t afforded the same rights as men, but generally feminism symbolizes equality for all. The SCUM manifesto preaches the exact opposite, wanting not just equality- dominance- for only a specific subset of women and oppression for everyone else. Her writing is fueled by personal revenges, such as her anger about art and artists being directed towards Andy Warhol. The Manifesto is highly transphobic, characterizing trans women as just men who have disocvered their need to be women, not as legitimate women themselves. Her opinions are even worse of gay men. Even housewives are out of the picture for the scope of her acceptance, in no way preaching for some kind of equality. Just as much as a work of misogyny, this work of misandry is dangerous and offensive for more than just men. I think this manifesto has the ability to be seized by feminist groups, at least in parts. That in my opinion is the worst possible outcome for feminism, because it completely goes against everything feminist and makes no sense to me. It undoes everything that women have worked towards, and what Valerie Solanas thought she was achieving by writing this- some kind of manifesto of unity and power– just shows her own bias and ignorance towards what makes actual change for women.
