The Anarchist Cookbook, written by William Powell, is a book that consists of specific instructions for manufacturing things like illicit substances, weapons, and even explosives. Powell wrote this when he was a teenager and the book became an immediate sensation. The legality of this text is still questioned to this day because of the step by step instructions listed for readers to create harmful drugs and weapons. Something that I found interesting while reading around this story was that this book can be used as evidence if you have possession of it and commit another crime. They are legally allowed to use the book in trial as a form of evidence to testify against you. So far, this book has supposedly been linked back to numerous acts of terrorism like the Oklahoma bombing and the Columbine high school shooting. The book itself is nothing short of a “cookbook” as it starts out with the category of drugs and what certain ones can do and how you can manufacture them yourself. The ingredients are included in these lists and step by step instructions on preparing them. Powell includes picture diagrams throughout the book showing the steps he has laid out, showing that this truly is a book meant to be followed. The first chapter of the “book” talks about drugs and alcohol and various “DIY” ways you can make them at home. The second chapter then branches out into electronics, like bugging devices, microphones, and tape recorders. The third chapter starts to dive much deeper and discuss weapons, including lethal and non lethal. This chapter talks about anatomy and how to kill people quickly and what ways work well to injure people. This section shows you how to wield a knife with pictures and how to effectively use them. After these, the rest of this chapter touches on specifically guns. Overall, with the amount of this I’ve read, I feel that I have gathered too much information already and can see why this is used in trials and when convicting criminals for possession of it.
