Growing up I was a history buff. I loved learning about what had happened and what is currently happening in the world. One topic that I read a lot of material on was World War II. While a lot happened during World War II the Holocaust was a vocal point and pertinent part of the war. When I was eleven, I was given the opportunity to visit Washington D.C. During this visit my family and I went into all the museums we could access, one of which was the Holocaust Museum. I do not remember specific details, but I do remember the overall emotions and thoughts that I took away from the visit. I remember moving through the museum very somberly. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the tragedy that I was taking in. I remember feeling upset at the crimes that took place and how little justice the victims received. In regard to the actual exhibits, I do not remember much. The one I do remember was a short film that the museum had playing on repeat in a dark room. The video was of the Nazis herding people into the trains that would transport them to the death camps. I am unsure whether the footage was real, but it was devastating knowing what awaited those people. While I was there the museum had an exhibit that displayed the shoes, luggage, and belongings, that the Jews were forced to leave behind at the entrance of the camps. As a young child, it was hard to process the injustice committed against these people, my innocence questioned how anyone could ever live with doing that. Overall, I think that the Holocaust Museum is an important source of information and history that must not be forgotten.
