Within my research paper I plan on examining different cultural aspects of France and how it led to the publications of obscene texts. I want to try and find more obscene authors but these two are the best and most obscene ones I have found yet. The specifics of what I want to look for are:

  • How did the obscenity come to be reflected into French culture?
  • What were the original ideas that came about with the publication of these texts?
  • What laws impacted the authors freedoms?
  • Did any other individuals get arrested for obscenity, if so why and how is it reflected into the novels of then?

I plan on writing this to be an analysis of then and while also answering the question of how. How did this dialog from authors begin, how did this expectation of authors form? My main sources I plan on using are going to be mostly secondary sources that where published in the united states, books published discussing similar ideas and what my own ideas become from it, and the books published during the time frame that help strengthen my argument, such as 120 Days of Sodom, Fanny Hill, and Justine . Utilizing these two authors I get to cover different aspects of obscenity and look at the retributions from it, such as jail time, societal changes and monetary loss.  I really want to examine the female characters within these texts. I believe that I can find out a lot about these questions and how they are answered within French culture.
