For this paper I plan to use the book Lolita written by Vladamir Nabokov, the 1962 film Lolita, and the 1997 movie Lolita. I will utilize scholarly articles of the media and case studies of pedophiles and their creation as well as mental state. Within this paper I plan to discuss the main character, Humbert, and his understanding of love and more over pedophilic incest. Humbert believes that not only his obsession with Dolores Haze, or more affectionately known as “Lolita” by him, is due the sudden and tragic death of his first love. Humbert credits the first time he fell in love as to why he even finds Lolita appealing. Humbert details his fascination with his young love and specifically notes her “youthfulness” and their sexual experimentation. Her passing is very devastating to Humbert and forever marks his inability to have his ideal juvenile love. Humbert is narrating his story to a jury and explaining that this is where he believes it all started. It is interesting to note the pedophilic disorder does not always begin because of sexual trauma to the person in their childhood, such as Humbert Humbert. Since Humbert was not ever capable of truly loving his late Annabel he mentally begins to associate lust, love, and nymphets. His understanding of these three concepts merging creates his mental state and the ability to form an infatuation with Lolita. Although Humbert intensely longs for Lolita he does understand that this longing is an infringement of societal norms. Due to this knowledge he involves himself in her life by marrying into her family and attempting to become a father figure. This is then where the abuse of his prepubescent step-daughter begins. At first he does not engage with her much but “admires from afar” and then continues to grow closer and then begin his abuse.
