My reaction to The SCUM Manifesto I would say was fairly positive, I enjoyed reading it, more so than anything else we have read. While reading the text it evoked feelings of empowerment and validation. Valerie Solanas’s unapologetic critique of male dominance could resonate with my frustration caused by the inequality between men and women. The manifesto’s rejection of traditional gender roles inspired my feelings of rebellion, defiance, and motivation to challenge systems more aggressively. Its bold language and refusal to bow down to societal expectations gave me a sense of power, as it speaks about the deep rooted change we so desperately need when it comes to systemic gender roles. Solanas’s extreme proposals, such as the eradication of men, can be disturbing and morally troubling. Personally I found it quite hilarious, men used to say the same thing about “witches”, I think she’s just an angry woman who wants to be understood in her anger instead of constantly silenced or called crazy. While I do agree with the author’s point on how the patriarchy is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary, I disagree with just getting rid of men in general, the idea is still funny though. The manifesto challenges both personal and political beliefs, made me think about societal roles, was a tad controversial, and a beautifully made text within feminist discourse. I think more people should be reading this, it shouldn’t just be a part of an fsem for forbidden texts. We should be using this work in English as well as psychology. We as a society could learn a lot from this because of it being so thought provoking. While for obvious reasons it is a little irking I don;t think it’s bad enough to be banned or restricted to read. She said what many women think and expressing her femal rage by taking it out on men as a group was fun to read.
