The first movie that we watched was The Armenian Genocide. This documentary shows footage of that time period, along with rulers and interviews with people that are survivors of the Genocide. The Armenian Genocide happened during World War I and was a result of the Ottoman Empire. After I watched this documentary, I read around it as to stay more informed on the subject. I learned that when this was first published, PBS wanted to wait to air it because of how controversial it would come across in Turkey, they decided to put it up anyways with the intent of creating a second part with both sides included. They wanted to make it “less controversial” by giving both Armenian and Ottoman Empire sides a voice. The Armenian Genocide went on from spring 1915 to fall 1916. In this time, Armenians were subject to things like being kicked out of the Ottoman Empire, and its surrounding territories. They were forced out of the country and most of them died due to things like dehydration and starvation from being on foot for so long. Along with this however, there were also many Armenians that were just massacred by the Ottoman soldiers. These massacres were taken both with groups of people and from just individual killings. During the documentary we heard some of these brutal words from survivors themselves, including people who survived murder attempts. I also learned that many Armenian children were forcibly removed from their families during this but instead of being killed, they were converted to Islam and sent back to live in the Ottoman Empire and its neighboring countries.
