I visited the Holocaust Museum when I was younger, in elementary school. I went with my parents when we were visiting DC, and I didn’t really know much about it when I visited; but, after visiting, I became interested in how people were affected and how it changed people’s lives. I read Anne Frank’s diary in middle school and other historical books about the Holocaust. I remember the museum having a very sad and eerie feeling, even to a child. It was very sad learning about the stories of the different people whose lives were changed. Looking at the website now, I see that there are also exhibits looking at the Holocaust through an American lens and showing how people in America were involved during and the roles they played. I think this is interesting and a good opportunity to learn more about our country’s involvement. I think that everyone at some point should visit the Holocaust Museum because seeing the artifacts and reading the stories of those impacted really changes the way that you look at things. Historical events can often have a feeling of depersonalization but once you see these things you can understand more. It’s important that we have things like this to make sure that people are educated and can see the way lives were truly impacted.
