The Protocols of the Elders of Zion falsely claims to be a detailed account of a secret meeting held by Jewish leaders. The text consists of 24 chapters each outlining a Protocol that contains various strategies for world domination. It starts off by discussing the use of liberalism to weaken governments and control the masses through manipulation and deception. As seen by this excerpt from the text, “Therefore, in governing the world the best results are obtained by means of violence and intimidation, and not by academic discussions.” There is an emphasis on controlling education and spreading propaganda, specifically through the news, to shape public opinion and suppress dissent. One of the protocols outlines plans to infiltrate and gain control of political parties. This is to ensure that the government leaders subscribe to the conspirator’s agenda, the text outlines the use of blackmail and bribery to achieve this goal. Furthermore, another protocol describes the tactic of exploiting social issues in order to divide and weaken societies with the goal of making them easier to control. There are many more protocols that outline similar ways to gain control over a population. Each protocol is filled with anti-Semitic rhetoric and conspiracy theories. The goal of this text was seemingly to incite anger, fear, and hatred against the Jewish people. The text was found to have actually been written by the Russian secret police, also known as Okhrana during that time period. They actually quote a work of satire on Napoleon III by Maurice Joly. What I find frustrating is that even though this text was proven to be forged and the authorship fabricated it was still used all throughout history to justify anti-Semitic beliefs.
