The book, 120 days of Sodom, starts out as a real story introducing real characters and their victims or wives and the kids that are kidnapped and taken hostage for their plan. The victims are described in great detail where as for the four “heroes” of the story, the only main description we get of them is of their penises. The structure of this story is normal for the first 300 pages and then slowly dissolves into just lists of horrible things done to the victims. It gets to the point where there are no names or descriptions even humanizing the people and its strictly the sexual acts that went on. Near the very end of the story is where things derail as the sexual acts just turn into violence, showing how demented Sade’s mind was by the end of his time he was imprisoned. Other main things that I noticed about this story were the large amounts of homosexuality mentioned. I question whether Sade added this because it was considered a sin and he wanted to include it along with the many other sins he talks about constantly, or if he added it in more of a misogynistic way. If it was the misogynistic route, the homosexuality would solely serve to be only a point of pleasure for the other men whereas the women were viewed as objects or even not people. There are a lot of instances in this story where women are beaten or murdered without much question about it. Overall I believe that this story should have most definitely been burned when it was found. There is no real reason to preserve this other than it being apart of history, this story isn’t even really a story, its more of a diary of all of the horrible thoughts Sade could come up with over a long period of time.
