Written by Jonathan Swift
1785
This was one of the most disturbing pieces of literature that I’ve read probably to this day. Incredibly, a book written in 1785 can still grasp the attention and disturb the minds of the 21st century. Other than the rapid pedophilia, and necophilia among other topics, the most alarming thing is how much of what is written down is somewhat based upon what De Sade fantasized about in his own life. The book continues to get more disturbing as the novel progresses. The main plot is that four wealthy French men take a large group of boys, men, women, and girls and proceed to a remote castle to do unspeakable things to them. The fetishes continue to get worse over time and by the end, they are engaging in torture and bestiality. One of the obvious things that I’ve wondered about in the book is why there wasn’t a rebellion. Considering how the book is just a collection of degenerate fantasies, it is unrealistic to think that four powerful men could just abuse all of these poor people without any resistance. Since he couldn’t finish the book. Much of it feels like notes of sodom as the ideas were down but since he was transferred out of the prison he could finish the book much to his dismay. This was an interesting book to read and I can’t say it was much of a page-turner so I’m glad it’s now behind me. What I do find most fascinating is the author’s life. He had many perversions and he expressed many of them in his book. Much of his life was also on the run from various authorities and he even played a part in the French Revolution. It’s very tragic that someone could spew fantasies out from their imagination like this and I’m glad we can look at this book with better context now.
