Marquis De Sade was definitely sick in the head! I had to take many, many breaks throughout this book, and I think that is a common theme because of the graphic nature of this text. I was really unprepared for how bad it actually is, and I am not even finished with this book. Basically, the book revolves around four rich libertines who want to give themselves the most pleasure they could imagine. They go to a castle and they have little girls, little boys, grown men, grown women, and old women all there to be used for their pleasure. Some of the more graphic parts were definitely with the children, and they were constantly being used for the men’s entertainment. The men often use the women and girls as objects, making them serve food naked, tell stories, and literally do whatever the men want them too. The women aren’t the only ones being tortured by these men, they also like young boys and men. I thought this was interesting for the time period they are in but I guess it makes sense since they really will do anything with anyone. I noticed a lot of the conversations about their activities have some mention of ‘Nature’ like they are using this as an excuse. On page 84, the Duc was telling everyone how libertinage was just a part of nature, and he was applauded for that take. I haven’t finished the book, but I have skim-read some of the pages in the back of the book and I honestly didn’t think it could get worse, but it definitely did. I think what really makes this text so disturbing is definitely the children and the depraved things that the men make them do, I think Marquis De Sade was gross for even including children in this book in the first place, let alone all of the other disgusting things mentioned.
