A Modest Proposal – Jonathan Swift

I believe that A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is a work of art. This satirical story starts with the title, giving the reader the idea that his proposal is going to be modest and fair when in reality it is the opposite of that. The main idea of this is that in order to prevent poverty, the already poor people should sell their children to the rich for money. The rich would then eat the children solving many issues like the poor continuing to be poor and the whole country having an abundance of food and not having to worry about starvation. He also includes the fact of overpopulation and how that is already affecting everything and that this proposal will solve the issues of the country. Swift, about halfway through this proposal, includes the idea that his scheme will prevent voluntary abortions because if they just wait a year, they can just sell the kid for money instead of paying to have it killed. Even though this is disgusting to readers, this is surface level of the direction that Swift goes with the rest of his proposal. He focuses in on the many different preparations styles of the children and how they would taste depending on which ways they are cooked. He makes a pass at the rich, claiming that if you label it as any kind of fancy roast or meat then they will buy it no question. The idea of the poor selling their children to keep the economy running is crazy in itself but adding the aspects of roasting the children and even going so far as to skin them to make them into gloves and boots make this writing all the more psychotic. I think that overall, Jonathan Swift’s “modest proposal” is genius because of its incredibly satirical nature that he drags throughout his entire writing.
