Mary is later portrayed to be a prostitute and to have been possessed by demons, but in this text, said to be written sometime in the 2nd century, she was one of Jesus’ close companions and he confided in her. The teachings that Jesus told to Mary were very radical, teachings of inner spirituality which contradicts the Bible. This text showed a lot of women leadership from this time, with Mary being one of Jesus’ closest confidants and I think that also contributes to why this was not included in the Bible. Besides the Gnosticism, I think that it was a very controversial idea that Jesus would confide in a woman rather than his disciples. In this text Jesus also speaks of a God who has no gender which is also very radical for the time that this was supposedly written. He talks about there being no sin, no hell, and only inner transformations. This text for me was easier to understand than the Gospel of Judas and I feel like Jesus’ messages here were more easily understood by me. That being said I don’t know if I necessarily believe this text either, I think maybe some of it was true but then was later rejected because of the Gnosticism and the close relationship of Jesus and a woman.
