This text is considered controversial because of the Gnostic elements throughout and the view that your worship can come from yourself instead of worshipping a God. Jesus’ teachings in this text contradicts the teaching of Jesus throughout the Bible. Jesus tells Judas about inner spirituality and ‘your God who is within you’. In this test Jesus and Judas’ relationship was seen to be closer than Jesus was with the disciples. Jesus shares his ‘true teachings’ with Judas and tells him about knowledge that the other disciples do not know. Later in the Bible, it is portrayed that Judas had betrayed Jesus but after reading this account it seems like Judas was understanding of what was happening with Jesus and trying to help him in a way to complete his mission, but I don’t necessarily think that is true, it is just the way it is portrayed. I am not very well versed on the actual Bible, but I do know that some of the metaphors and things referenced in this text don’t have any place in the Bible. Some of the confusing words and phrases to me while I was reading this are the mention of Angels, being angelic self-generated and the reference of a house that Judas has had a dream about. The word ‘generation’ is also used quite frequently with Jesus telling Judas; ‘Truly no generation of the people among you will know me’, which I feel contradicts the Bible also because the whole point is to have a personal connection with Jesus and God. So throughout reading this text I did notice a lot of contradictions between this, and the Bible and I was also confused myself because of my limited knowledge of things Christianity-related but I don’t think this is a fully true text regarding conversations between Jesus and Judas.
