The Gospel of Mary Magdalene is interesting. Mary Magdalene is portrayed in later gospels as a prostitute and a woman who is hiding many demons. In this gospel, however, she is seen as one of the most trusted women by Jesus. Jesus tells her about his teachings directly, signaling that they had a very close relationship. The other apostles beg Mary to hear what she was told and all get offended by her knowledge. While reading around this text, I found that many people believe this story to be controversial or inappropriate because “Jesus would not have revealed such important teachings to a woman.” I believe that Mary was discredited later on by people, leading to additions of her being a prostitute and being a sole witness of Jesus’ crucifixion. Another important note to add onto this gospel is the significance of her name being Mary. I think that there already being a Mary portrayed as a virgin and holy gives no more room to have another positive woman or even Mary figure. Mary Magdalene was given a bad name essentially because there was no more room for women of even remote power in the bible. At the end of the day, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene is discredited all around because of who she is seen as later on in gospels. “Her stature cannot be greater than that of the male apostles” is a quote also found reading around this gospel that shuns Mary’s light because of the fact that she was a woman who was questionably close to Jesus.
