The Gospel of Mary was thought to have been written in the early 2nd century AD and wasn’t found until 1896 in Cairo Egypt. While there are several Marys of importance in the Bible, this one is specifically talking about Mary Magdalene who was thought to be a prostitute but that has been considered slander by some. The Gospel has also been mentioned briefly by some early church fathers as early as the 3rd century ad. In the book, Mary is thought of as one of the disciples of Jesus.
The story goes that many of the disciples are in dismay at the death of Jesus and need reassurance. However, they are surprised when Mary can reminisce about the visions that she received from Jesus on the day he died. Unfortunately, the other disciples do not believe what she tells them. The text could have been simply lost to time or it’s possible that people didn’t want a Woman to have such a prominent role in Christian theology. There is also the question of the role that the Virgin Mary already has in the story. Perhaps they didn’t want the other Mary to take away from the already famous one. Regardless of what is true or not this text is an important insight to the Gnostic writings of the time.
