To begin, I wanted to look into some context behind this text. It was written by William Powell and published in 1971, and this edition had a prefatory note from P.M. Bergman. When the text was published it was at the peak of the counterculture era. It was also published when the ideas pushing against the Vietnam War were very strong. Powell being drafted into the Vietnam War can help the reader assume that he was so against it because of his experience he may have had during that time. At this time hippies were more prevalent and the pacifist movements started to take more violent turns. This text writes about many illegal

In general I found this book to be just the strangest text ever. I don’t understand the true logic of why someone would write a text like this. After doing some more research about the text I found that Powell supposedly wrote this text to educate the “silent majority” of America’s population. One of his main points was that it’s okay to use violence in hopes of bringing political change. He also claims that this text was more to protect the general population against fascist, capitalist, and communist threats. In my opinion, I don’t know if I fully believe that idea, but it’s an interesting perspective to take.

Getting more into the text, I again found it super strange. I personally feel like no normal or average person needs to know all the ins and outs about drugs, surveillance, sabotage, different kinds of weapons, explosives, or booby traps. All of these topics are talked about in this text, and they all go into vast detail. For example, he gives multiple methods to grow weed, which was an illegal substance at the time, and is still illegal in some states. Funnily enough he also gives many recipes that include weed which I found funny. He also gives many run downs on certain drugs and how they can affect you, and gives multiple recipes on how to make other drugs like LSD.

One strange takeaway that I had from this text was just how smart this guy was. He might not have known everything by heart, but he knew all of this information well enough to write a book about all of these foul and bad activities. It’s the kind of smarts that can be scary because of how possibly dangerous this guy could be.
