Theodore Kaczynski’s purpose in writing his 35,000 word essay, Industrial Society and Its Future, also known as The Unabomber Manifesto, was his argument that the Industrial Revolution and increase in technological advances has begun to destroy nature while simultaneously forcing humans to sacrifice their own personal freedoms in order to adapt to the age of machines. While this argument is rational and defensible in and of itself, Kaczynski had a really extreme way of achieving his goals: a mail bomb campaign. His viewpoint was that he would singlehandedly collapse industrial society by sending bombs to people through the mail and, therefore, save the environment. This guy was a serious lunatic. He originally printed his manifesto in supplements to the Washington Post and New York Times and offered to end his mail bomb campaign in exchange for national exposure. However, this backfired on Kaczynski as the printing was used by the FBI to help identify the author and Kaczynski’s own brother, David Kaczynski, later identified him as the author. Kaczynski was so undeniably crazy that his attorneys justified their insanity defense by claiming The Unabomber Manifesto was the work of a madman, which it pretty much was. In spite of Kaczynski’s violence and insanity, the main points of his argument are valid and even supported today. It is undeniable that the environment has suffered since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and subsequent increase in technological advancements and machines. Even today, global warming and climate change are extremely prevalent in the news due to the deadly increase in forest fires across not only the nation, but the entire world. Additionally, hurricanes have increased in severity and frequency caused by climate change. Both forest fires and extreme hurricanes threaten peoples lives, occupations, and housing on a daily basis. In a research project I did in high school, I came across the startling fact that the agriculture industry is suffering due to forest fires, hurricanes, and droughts caused by climate change. Although The Unabomber Manifesto was written by someone undoubtedly mentally unstable and can be classified as the ravings of a lunatic, the main points are valid and relevant more than ever today.
