In a way I can see why this Gospel was removed from the Bible. Seeing everything that transpired from Judas’ point of view would have caused a massive shift in how we see the stories of the Bible. What was most interesting to me though was the cosmogony that was presented. The idea of a great spirit not even the angels have seen, as well as the luminous cloud that brought forth the Self-Generated, is like nothing else presented in the Bible. To my knowledge, there is no other instance of someone attempting to explain where God himself came from, and how Heaven and the angels came to be. Of course, my knowledge of the Bible is quite limited, so I cannot say that for certain. What is more interesting is that this cosmogony is not included anywhere else in the Bible. Although I doubt anyone can say for sure, it is possible that the Gospel of Judas was one of the books thrown out during the Council of Nicaea, which to my understanding is where a bunch of high-ranking nobles went through all the books and scriptures and decided what would be the single Christian doctrine. This was good in some aspects, as it did unify the church and begin the recorded history of the religion. However, we cannot expect that a group of old, rich, political men to be completely unbiased when choosing what to put into the unified book we now know as the Bible. What I’m saying is, they chose what to put in the book and what they chose to some degree had to have been what they personally believed in. Given that this Gospel was written from the view of the betrayer Judas, there is a high likelihood they wouldn’t have wanted it in the Bible, along with something like the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and probably others that have been lost to history. Which means that the people reading the Bible today in America are working with one version of one translation of one incomplete text that some old men decided would be the one true book. What gave them the right to decide that? What would be seen as different in the Bible if they had kept all these scriptures and books that have since been lost to history?
